Children hold screens closer than adults, and their lenses are still developing, so more high energy blue light reaches the retina. Research shows evening screen light suppresses melatonin and reduces REM sleep.
Night Shift dims the whole spectrum and turns the screen orange, which makes reading and drawing feel unnatural. This blue light screen protector targets only the harmful wavelengths, so the screen still looks right.
FDA registered and developed by optometrists.
Want to understand why screens are harder on your eyes than a book? Read our guide to digital eye strain and the four hidden reasons screens tire your eyes.
You read in bed. You scroll before sleep. Your body is trying to wind down. Research shows certain blue light wavelengths suppress melatonin and reduce REM sleep. Most people think they sleep badly because they are stressed. Often it is what they did with their screen at 10pm.
Not all blue light is bad. During the day it keeps you alert. The problem is the high energy light between 380 and 455nm hitting your eyes at night. Ocushield filters that range at the glass. Your screen still looks normal. Night Shift just turns everything orange, which is why most people switch it off.
There are a lot of blue light products making a lot of claims. So I tested it. I gave Ocushield filters to health professionals, teachers and golf pros, then tracked the results. One person recorded a 74 per cent increase in restorative sleep on a Whoop band. He had tried two other brands with no result. Ocushield is FDA registered and made by optometrists. That is why I stock it.
It comes with an alignment tray. Place the tray, press the filter down, squeeze out the air with the tool. Done. No adhesive. Touch and Apple Pencil work exactly as before. Put it on and leave it on.
Very good quality, really can protect the eye after using.highly recommended
There's room for improvement. My direction is towards the fact that with an illuminated backdrop or ambient light, the screen is obscured and also super reflective of the user's own details and surroundings, and I also noticed its prone to smudges and often needs to be tidied. Apart from that, the protector seems solid and I hope it will hold out for a while.
I discovered occushield after reading about the dangers of blue light and its effect on sleep in particular. I have ordered several products for different devices. I'm pleased with the quality of the screens. The company ethos and customer service is excellent. I would definitely recommend Occushield.
Decided to get one for new IPad and certainly not disappointed. Makes such a difference when using for long periods of time. Easy to fit with the enclosed frame. Would definitely recommend. Thank you.
Gives me huge piece of mind that I can continue to study at night without it totally impacting my sleep.
The evidence sits much more strongly with sleep than with eye strain. The circadian system is most sensitive to light in the 450 to 480nm range, which is exactly what an iPad emits.
Research has shown that using a light emitting device in the hours before bed suppresses melatonin, delays sleep onset and reduces REM sleep. Chang and colleagues demonstrated this in 2015.
Melatonin does not just make you feel sleepy, it shapes how much time you spend in deep and REM sleep, which is the restorative part.
The Ocushield iPad filter reduces that blue light at the source, which may support more natural melatonin production in the evening.
On digital eye strain alone, the Cochrane review found no significant correlation with blue light - but more studies are being done.
Night Shift shifts colour temperature across a broad range of wavelengths. It is a blunt instrument, it gives you a heavy orange tint, and most people turn it off within a week because everything looks wrong.
The Ocushield filter works on the glass, targeting the wavelengths that matter for melatonin, without that colour shift. Run both if you like. The filter is the one you will actually keep using.
Very slightly, and most people stop noticing within a day or two. The filter maintains high transparency so photos, video and reading all look normal.
My own experience with these on my laptop, desktop and phone is that the difference only becomes obvious when you take it off.
Each listing is matched to specific iPad models. Check yours in Settings, General, About, or on the back of the device.
The physical dimensions are included in every product listing so you can confirm the fit before ordering. If you are between two options, the millimetre measurements will settle it.
Easier than most people expect. The Ocushield iPad filter comes with an installation tray that sits over the top of your device and aligns the filter perfectly, so there is no guesswork and no crooked edges.
Clean the screen first, position the tray, then press the filter down onto the iPad. Use the included tool to work out any air bubbles from the centre towards the edges. Straightforward, and no adhesive to fight with.
No. Scrolling, tapping and Apple Pencil all work normally. This is a common question and thankfully the touch sensitivity is still great.
Yes, and children are arguably who need them most. A child's lens is not fully matured as effectively as an adult lens does. More of that light reaches the retina.
There is also the sleep link. Reasearch is pointing to the eyeball lengthening during the day and recovering overnight. It's suggested that poor sleep reduces that recovery phase, which matters for myopia.
When schools have installed filters on devices, the feedback has been less fatigue through the day and more rested eyes for both staff and children.
If a parent asks me for a suggestion of just one thing to do, it's to put a filter on the device.
