What Is Tearshield Technology And How Does It Work
The tear film has three layers. The outermost lipid layer, produced by the meibomian glands, slows evaporation. The middle aqueous layer provides the bulk of the hydration. The innermost mucin layer helps tears spread evenly and adhere to the corneal surface.
Most lubricating drops replenish the aqueous layer only. Rohto Dry Aid Tearshield Technology uses sesame oil to support the lipid layer, povidone for the aqueous layer, and polyoxyl stearate to assist mucin layer function. All three layers addressed in a single drop.
Why Do Rohto Dry Aid Drops Feel Different On Application
The drops contain menthol, which produces a mild cooling sensation immediately after instillation. This is a known characteristic of the formulation rather than an indication of irritation.
The lipid component also means the drops can feel slightly different to a standard aqueous drop. They are formulated to be non-blurring despite the oil content, which is the main concern people have with lipid containing drops before trying them.
Can You Use Rohto Dry Aid With Contact Lenses
No. Remove contact lenses before instilling the drops and wait at least fifteen minutes before reinserting. The lipid and oil components in the formula are not compatible with lens material and can cause deposits on the lens surface.

What Does EFR Silver Mean On An Eye Drop
For eye drops, the Eyehouse EFR standard applies a stricter preservative rule than for cosmetics. Gold requires completely preservative free. Silver permits a mild preservative from the approved list.
Rohto Dry Aid contains PHMB at 0.0001%, a mild preservative that sits within the Silver permitted range. It is free from benzalkonium chloride, phenoxyethanol, and all other harsh preservatives excluded at Silver. For occasional use up to twice daily, PHMB at this concentration is considered low risk on the ocular surface.
