Children are using devices at school instead of pen and paper now. I walk around schools and notice this constantly, in a way that was never the case even a few years ago.
Nine out of ten parents I speak with in consultation reference device use as a source of ongoing tension at home. Here is what actually helps, beyond just saying no.

Why Children's Eyes Face Different Risks
Children are not just small adults when it comes to screen exposure. Two specific risks apply to them that do not apply the same way to adults.
The first is myopia progression. A child's eye lengthens during the day and partially recovers, or shortens back, during sleep. Poor sleep from blue light disruption reduces this recovery phase, which can accelerate myopia development over time.
The second is lens immaturity. A child's lens has not fully matured and cannot filter high energy wavelengths as effectively as an adult lens. That means more high energy light reaches the retina with every hour of screen exposure.

What I See Parents Get Wrong Most Often
Consistency is the biggest failure, not intent. Telling a child once or twice is not enough. Habits have to be built, the same way any other habit is built.
Taking the device away entirely is not the solution either. Children need to learn to use devices safely for their future, not avoid them altogether.
Our body is like a battery. It has a certain amount of energy. Physical takes a bit, cognitive load takes a bit, visual load takes a bit.
This is a concept worth understanding properly. Visual load is a genuine drain on that battery, equal in impact to cognitive or physical load. A child who has been on a screen for hours has depleted visual cortex capacity. Sitting that same child down for homework straight afterward is the equivalent of taking a child from an hour at the gym directly into an intensive study session.
The Setup Matters as Much as the Time Limit
Screen distance around 45 to 55 centimetres from the device, back straight, chin up, eyes rolled slightly downward rather than straight ahead or upward. Blinds down to reduce reflection off windows. Room brightness should roughly match screen brightness, since a bright screen in a dark room forces the eyes to work much harder.
A screen filter on the device remains the primary, single most important intervention. Not the most convenient answer for busy parents, but the most important one.

Screen related impacts on behaviour show up at school before they show up as a specific complaint, decreased attention, reduced focus, and lower performance are often the first signs, well before a child says their eyes feel tired.
Sleep Is Where This Compounds
Screen use before bed is clinically linked to increased insomnia risk in children, altered behaviour, reduced attention and focus, and measurable eye health changes, including dry eyes and a slower blink rate.
My own children use screen filters and blue light glasses specifically when using devices before bed. It is a simple household rule rather than a special exception.
Realistic Screen Time Guidelines
Under 5 years old, no screens is the ideal, though this is rarely fully realistic in practice. Ages 6 to 10, around half an hour per day. Ages 11 to 15, around two hours per day. From 16 onward, device use becomes genuinely necessary for school and life.
Research guidelines exist, but compliance is consistently low, children exceed these limits in almost every household. That is exactly why the guidelines should be treated as a conservative buffer rather than a strict target, and why the screen filter and blue light glasses become the minimum, practical intervention when a family has effectively lost control of device time.

This is a more realistic version of the well known 20-20-20 rule for children specifically, since it asks for a shorter, more frequent break that fits how children actually use devices in short bursts.
