Patients ask me this almost every week. Screen protector or blue light glasses, which one do I actually need?
The honest answer is that they are not solving the same problem. Here is what the research actually says, and what I have seen consistently in over 20 years of practice.

What the Research Actually Says
Let's address this directly, because the evidence here is genuinely mixed and worth being upfront about.
A 2023 Cochrane review, one of the most rigorous forms of medical evidence available, analysed 17 randomised controlled trials on blue light filtering spectacle lenses. It found no short-term advantage for reducing eye strain from computer use, and the effect on sleep quality was inconclusive.
People are complaining of eye strain from devices, right? That is a categoric, yes. Any optometrist will tell you that.
So how do we reconcile patients categorically experiencing eye strain with a review that found no clear benefit from the glasses marketed to fix it? The answer is that blue light was never the whole story.
The Core 4: Why Blue Light Is Only Part of the Problem
When you read a book under a lamp, you get blue light exposure too, yet nobody gets eye strain from reading. Replace the book with a screen, and four additional stressors compound the problem at once:
Specular glare. Reflections off the glass surface that your eyes constantly fight to see past.
Increased luminance. Screens are simply brighter than the printed page or your surrounding environment.
Visual noise. Try this yourself. Watch a dark scene in a bright room, then close the blinds and turn off the lights and watch the same scene again. What you can suddenly see is exactly what visual noise does to a screen all day long.
Blue light scatter. Blue light has a shorter wavelength than red or green light, and it scatters far more inside the eye. This is why optometrists use red and green light specifically during refraction testing, the difference in scatter is measurable and significant.
This is why the Cochrane review's finding makes sense rather than contradicting what patients experience. It tested blue light filtering alone. It was never testing the full combination of glare, luminance, visual noise, and scatter that a screen produces together.

What Screen Protectors Actually Address
A quality screen protector, the kind designed specifically for this purpose rather than a basic anti-scratch film, addresses all four of the Core 4 factors at once. That is the fundamental difference between a screen protector and a pair of glasses.
I use these on my own laptop and desktop personally.

In my own clinical experience, one patient wearing clear lens blue light glasses measured a striking increase in restorative sleep on a Whoop band. I want to be clear that this is a personal, patient reported observation rather than a general claim.

I work till 11, 12 at night sometimes and I go to sleep really easily, no problems at all. I have no trouble.
So Which One Should You Actually Use
For daytime eye strain, choose the screen protector. It addresses the full Core 4 combination rather than blue light in isolation.
For evening wind down and sleep support, choose the glasses (as well as the screen filter if you have the budget for it). Not just for your device screens either, LED lighting throughout your home suppresses melatonin the same way (but to a lesser degree depending on it's intensity).
Why take a supplement when you can actually just create more yourself by putting on blue light glasses?
If you could only choose one, the screen protector wins for daytime relief. But most people managing serious screen fatigue end up using both, at different times of day - or the glasses, for sleep reasons.
Once they're on, leave it on. We don't want to unnecessarily expose your eyes to the issues that come from screens.
